The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, on Tuesday, expressed satisfaction with the progress presented by the Centre on the matter of installation of CCTV cameras in tribunals after the latter got a rap from the Hon’ble Court, just last week, for adopting a callous approach on the issue of audio video recording of court proceedings
A bench comprising of A.K. Goel and U.U. Lalit, JJ., readily expressed that substantial work had been done as regards the SC’s holding for the need for CCTV cameras in court rooms and at other important positions in various Tribunals, High Courts and Subordinate Courts. The Court further did find it expedient to bring up the concerns regarding safeguarding the identity of victims in cases of sexual offences and protected witnesses.
The Hon’ble Bench further added that “all the (technical) specifications as well as the price range and sources of supply may be placed by the Ministry of Law & Justice on its website so that uniform standard approach can be adopted at all places. This may also be cost-effective and obviate the need for a tender process to save time..”
The matter is listed for further hearing on 5th April, 2018.
These observations are resultant of the Petition filed Mr. Pradyuman Bisht, who approached the Hon’ble Court seeking transparency in court proceedings, a matter that has been raised time and again to instil a system of surveillance and checks upon the judicial process. In August 2017, the Court had found it in good cause to provide for CCTV cameras to be installed in all subordinate courts in the country.
