On Tuesday, Delhi High Court sought reply from Delhi government regarding a plea. The plea sought directions to provide cooked midday meal to eligible students amid the lockdown imposed by the coronavirus.
Chief Justice DN Patel along with Justice Prateek Jalan issued a notice to the government seeking their response and further gave a date to hear the matter. The matter will be heard again on June 16th.
The PIL seeking directions from the government to provide midday meal to eligible students during the lookdown was filed by an NGO named Mahila Ekta Manch.
The petitioner stated that the NGO was approached by a bunch of parents of school-going kids who are also beneficiaries of the midday meal operation provided by the Central government.
The midday meal is a way to invite more students from the disadvantaged areas of society and it also provides food security to poor children. It also helps in developing the health of children who suffer from malnutrition. The petitioner stated that during the onset of the pandemic due to coronavirus, government agencies and medical experts vouched for providing midday meal for boosting the immunity of children but the Delhi government has stopped doing so.
The petitioner stated that the beneficiaries of the scheme came from the weaker section of the society. Parents are facing grave hardships due to the lockdown and lack of economic activity. Their children have not been getting proper food due to the lockdown
