For the first time, all of the three judges of a bench in Supreme Court used laptops to browse through cases rather than files.
Justice D Y Chandrachud along with Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Ajay Rastogi conducted a hearing through video conferencing which was paperless as all three of them used a laptop.
Usually, judges have to go through a huge bulk of files during a hearing in the apex court. Recently, CJI Bobde introduced the process of e-filing cases in the Supreme Court from all over the nation to replace manual filing of cases with the apex court registry.
The e-committee of the Supreme Court project to cut the wastage of time and money led by Justice Chandrachud said that it is the first time in the history of judiciary and the Supreme Court that judges have gone paperless. He also added that it is a step forwards towards modern courts.
The judges said that this step is empowering as they do not have to delegate their work and do not need to depend on others. There is no need to worry about sanitation and hygiene as everything is paperless.
Judges elaborated the procedure by describing how a zip filed is sent to them electronically and it is then downloaded and converted into a PDF document which is then used to study and hear the case.
Judges stated that they use the laptop to take notes on the case and refer it while hearing the case.
CJI Bobde said in a recent interview that virtual courts are not a substitute for open courts but due to the compulsion of the pandemic, virtual courts are being conducted through video-conferencing to hear cases.
