While hearing a petition regarding the preparation of safe transport arrangements for migrant workers, The Supreme Court allowed the lawyer and petitioner to pay Rs 25 lakhs. The money was allowed to be deposited so that individuals from Uttar Pradesh can return home from Mumbai.
Sagheer Ahmed Khan who is an Advocate in the Mumbai High Court requested the court to direct the state and central government to make arrangements for the migrants stuck in Mumbai to return to UP districts Basti and Sant Kabir Nagar which is also home to the lawyer. He also offered to pay Rs 25 Lakh for making such arrangements.
The Court today asked the lawyer in a hearing if he is ready to pay. The lawyer answered in affirmative that he is. The court then directed Advocate Khan to deposit the money with the SC registry. The Court said that the deposit has to be made within a week in the SC registry as the petitioner was reluctant to donate to the PM Cares as the deposit is supposed to be for travel arrangements for migrants from UP. The case is further to be heard on June 12th.
The petitioner said that he is willing to deposit the amount to the SC registry as he has full faith in the Supreme Court but he doesn’t have much trust in the state government.
He explained that after the extension of the lockdown after 4th of May, a lot of Migrants were calling him up for help. He contacted the state and central government to guide him in this reference of what could be done but he did not get a proper response. He also contacted the UP nodal officer and chief minister but was ridiculed. He even contacted the police station in Mumbai for registration but was asked to provide two individual pictures of each migrant amidst the lockdown. That is why he decided to move to the Supreme Court. He filed a petition of May 13th and it came up on May 15th.
