All India Lawyers organisation Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad (ABAP) has made a representation before the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to direct nationalised banks to provide loans of up to 5 lakh rupees to Advocates.
The representation further requested for concessional rate of interest on loans to be provided to advocates on their personal security. The period of repayment of loan has been requested to be three years starting after moratorium of six months following the disbursement.
The lawyers organisation said that due to the Covid-19 lockdown the courts couldn’t function properly leaving many advocates especially those practising at subordinate courts like District and Taluka levels, in severe financial distress. The organisation highlighted the Karnataka tragedy where an advocate committed suicide due to financial distress.
It also laid stress on the financial needs of the advocates such as making arrangements for electronic gadgets like computers, etc. for the virtual proceedings and paying their regular expenses like payment of rent, payment of salary to clerks and other staff, etc.
