Former Judge of the Orissa High Court, Justice Bijoy Narayan Patnaik passed away on Sunday aged 84 at his Palaspalli residence. He was 84 and is survived by his wife, one son and three daughters. He was born on 23/7/1936 at Berhampur, Ganjam district. At first, he graduated from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack in 1955.Later he pursued for law and Obtained LL.B., degree from M.S. Law College, Cuttack under Utkal University in 1957. Justice Patnaik began his law practice as a pleader at Cuttack from March, 1958 to October, 1961, just after obtaining his LLB degree. While in Judicial Service obtained LL.M., degree under Utkal University
He joined the Judicial Service in 1961 and held various posts in the Subordinate Judiciary. He also served himself as a District Judge in the districts of Cuttack, Puri and Balasore. Later he Held the post of Director of Public Prosecutions, Orissa.
He served as the Registrar (Administration) in the Orissa High Court before being appointed as a Judge at the same High Court in 1994. After a brief period of service in Orissa, he was transferred to the Kerala High Court on June 26, 1994.
He demitted once on July 22, 1998 and returned to Odisha where he served as the Chairman of Odisha State Administrative Tribunal Kerala High Court had also instituted an award under his name, ‘Justice BN Patnaik Award’, for outstanding lawyers, which is given every two years.
