Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue.” The notion of freedom of speech is “the right to express information, ideas, and opinions free of government restrictions based on content and subject only to reasonable limitations.” But nowadays these limitations are broken and social media is being used to incite people against the government. Social media sometimes magnifies the issues relating to the government and its method of functioning so that they are more exaggerated than they would be through conventional media.
Social media is like a community place of the past, a place where aggravated people can get together to discuss and raise protests. Facebook has played a large role in this revolution since it has taught users a new way to create groups, spread information all over the globe and voice their opinion unanimously. But it is being used to criticize the government and incite them against the government by the people who are against the government or in the opposition.
Social media has had a profound effect on society as in this modern age people have a great impact and influence of what is being propagated by the social media and they tend to believe it whether the things are reliable and true or not.
A few instances are, last year, Ramesh Shinde, a police constable who was posted as a bodyguard of former revenue minister and Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat, made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over WhatsApp.
CMO official Nidhi Kamdar's fake Facebook profile was made and messages were forwarded from the profile to imply that the CMO is engaged in luring certain elements of the society for its anterior motives.
There are around five lakh employees working in different government departments in the state. For the past few years, it has been observed that several employees including senior officials have taken to social media to express their views on issues ranging from Kashmir politics and governance to human rights which criticize the government and can incite the people against the government.
Discussion about the government on social media should be in a way which does not incite people aganst the government or makes them rebellious. Criticism is essential so that the government takes in consideration the flaws and tries to improvise them but defamation and making derogatory remarks against the government due to hate to incite people against it should not be done and measures should be taken to prevent it.
