A high-level meeting, chaired by Union home secretary Rajiv Gauba is convened to discuss the rise of online ‘trolls’ and ‘keypad jihadis’ who post malicious and communal content on social media websites intended to incite violence. The meeting will be attended by top officials from the ministry of electronics and information technology, the department of telecommunications and those from security agencies as well as Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting will also discuss fruitful solutions as to how to deal with such persons who attempt to heighten communal tensions using keypads, and how to effectively implement legal solutions to eliminate them. Social media is increasingly becoming the battleground for propagating hateful speech and incite violence against targeted groups. Mediums such as Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp are now the number one tools to influence and spread fake news. In fact, recently 5 twitter handles were booked by the J&K police for misleading content. Instances of fake news about firing in the Valley, morphed photos of shrines, etc. are regularly circulated across group chats.
The meeting will be discussing this reality and also taking into account the upcoming two-month long Amarnath Yatra, where any misleading news on the group chats can lead to serious communal violence. The meeting will focus on how to combat this form of ‘cyber terrorism’.
