The Union Minister for Law and Justice, Ravi Shankar Prasad, while addressing a press conference on 18th June, discussed a plethora of issues, ranging from the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India to the anticipated Triple Talaq bill.
While there is ambiguity surrounding the next CJI, Prasad said that they will follow the established convention, where the sitting CJI will name his successor. This comes after Justice Gogoi, who is expected to take up the position, held an unprecedented press conference against the current CJI in January. With regards to the talk of introducing an entrance exam for lower judiciary, he said that it is ‘a work in progress’ but emphasized upon its need all the same.
Further, Prasad did not clarify as to whether the Government would be imposing an ordinance for the triple talaq bill but instead stated that all parties ‘must look beyond the political divide’. He also spoke of the construction of a National Litigation Policy to clear up pending government litigation and the Supreme Court mandated Judges Memorandum of Procedure. During the press conference, he highlighted the role ‘Digital India’ played in improving judicial infrastructure in the past 4 years, stating that, “We have used technology to speed up delivery, and to assure accountability.”
