In a remarkable step towards accountability and transparency, the Supreme Court of India on Monday took the side of live streaming of all the cases except for rape cases and matrimonial matters.
The bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A. M. Khanwilkar and D. Y. Chandrachud, noted it as a ‘‘need of the hour’’ and insisted on speedy development on the same behalf.
In the Petition, Ms. Jaising states that live streaming of such cases will increase access to courts, and will “negate the chances of any misreporting, errors or second-hand information”. She further claims that the “right to seek, receive information including live streaming of Supreme Court proceedings” is a Fundamental Right definite under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution.
She also says that cases which have effect on public at large or cases which are of public importance should be telecasted openly. Centre should develop an infrastructure for live streaming, until then You Tube should be the platform for all this.
It can be recalled, that in August last year, SC gave orders to install CCTV cameras inside the subordinate Courts within a month and audio recording may also be done.
