Hours after retirement from the Supreme Court, Justice AK Goel has been appointed as the new NGT chairman. A notification by Department of Personnel and Training has intimated the appointment to the much sought for position. Justice Goel enrolled at the Bar in 1974. He practised before the Punjab & Haryana High Court for five years and the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court for about twenty-two years. He was elevated as the judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court in 2001 before being transferred to Gauhati High Court in September 2011, where he became Chief Justice in December 2011. He was then transferred as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court in October 2013 before being elevated to the Supreme Court where he took charge on July 7, 2014.
The notification read” “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal for appointment of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Judge Supreme Court of India as Chairperson, National Green Tribunal (NGT), in the pay scale and with such allowances and benefits as are admissible for the post, for a period of 05 years w.e.f the date of assumption of charge of the post, or till the age of 70 years, whicehever is earlier.
The post of NGT chairperson was lying vacant for more than 6 months since the retirement of Justice Swatanter Kumar on December 20 last year. Various important matters relating to the environment such as air pollution, Ganga and Yamuna rejuvenation, Vaishno Devi, challenge to various redevelopments projects in Delhi, Volkswagen emission fiasco and others are pending before the tribunal.
