The event is particularly notable, with the appointment of two-woman judges for the first time in its 90years long history.
In 1928, the high court of Jammu and Kashmir was established by the then Maharaja Hari Singh, prior to which the maharaja used to be the final authority in the administration of Justice. Since then, the High Court has had 107 Judges and chief Justice, but none of them has been a woman.
The Central government on Friday evening notified the appointment of Justice Gita Mittal as the new Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir. Justice Mittal was till now the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. And Advocate Sindhu Sharma as a new Judge to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court after the President issued their respective warrants of appointment.
It is a great honour that the Jammu and Kashmir High Court is getting a women Chief Justice and a Women Judge. Their appointment is a fine example of the women empowerment and a historic moment for all of us.
