Nagaland’s first women MP S. Phangnon Konyak takes oath in Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Six new members are elected as Rajya Sabha MP’s in which three of the MP’s are from Northeast including Nagaland’s first women, S. Phangnon konyak as MP of the Upper House. Phangnon Konyak took oath in the Rajya Sabha on Monday who has been elected unopposed as BJP’s representative from Nagaland.

  1. Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland became the first women as Rajya Sabha MP when she took the member’s oath in the house. Out of the six MP’s who took oath in the Rajya Sabha are from different-different political parties. Two are from the BJP (S. Phangnon konyak from Nagaland and Pabitra Margherita from Assam), and one each from the UPPL (Rwngwra Narzary from Assam), CPI (Sandosh Kumar from Kerala), CPI(M) {AA Rahim from Kerala} and Congress (Jebi Mather Hisham from Kerala). Margherita after forming an alliance with UPPL’s Rwngwra Narzary received 46 votes and Narzary got 44 votes, which helped them to beat the congress representative Ripun Bora.
  2. phangnon Konyak, Nagaland’s first women as Rajya sabha member took oath on Monday wearing her traditional Naga clothes and jewellery, in the presence of chairman of the upper house, M Venkaiah Naidu and other parliamentarians. Konyak became the second female parliamentarian from the state after she was declared elected uncontested to fill the state’s lone sit in the Council of State. The 44 years olds election is significant as Nagaland never had a women in the Upper house in the history of almost 60 years. She took charge of the office following the former Rajya Sabha member KG Kenye’s retirement on April 2.

Phangnon Konyak is the Mahila Morcha president of the Bhartiya Janta Party’s Nagaland unit. She had filed nomination last month in the presence of the chief minister of the Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio and the state president of BJP Temjen Imna. Election at the lone Nagaland seat was supposed to be held on March 31, but Konyak was elected unopposed.

Many state leaders took to twitter to congratulate Phangnon Konyak.

Nagaland BJP president Temjen Imna tweeted, ‘‘Heartiest congratulation to smti.@phangnon on taking oath as the MP of Rajya Sabha on today. The entire team of @BJP4Nagaland is proud of your much deserved attainment. Hope you may continue to be an inspiration to all women as you take on this new venture. Wishing you the best.’’

Nagaland deputy chief minister Y Patton, who had attended the oath ceremony, said, ‘‘Attended the oath ceremony of smti.@phangnon as MP Rajya Sabha, joined by my colleagues Shri@jacob_zhimomi and shri@MmhonlumoKikon. On this historic moment, I congratulate her once again and extended my profound gratitude to our alliance partners for their support.’’

Nagaland BJP general secretary Khevishe Sema posted on twitter, ‘‘ Heartiest congratulation to smti.@phangnon konyak ji on oath taking as MP Rajya Sabha from Nagaland in the parliament at New Delhi, today.’’

Phangnon also said, ‘‘As I stepped in to the Rajya Sabha today, I could fully feel the responsibility and the trust that was being reposed me. I will forever remember the oath. Will do everything in my capacity to make @BJP4India @narendramodi ji and the party leadership proud of the faith they have shown.’’
