A Sentence of Life imprisonment is pronounced against the main accused of Kathua Gang Rape case by the District and Sessions Judge. The main accused in the case Sanji Ram, his friend Parvesh Kumar and a special police officer Deepak Khajuria were sentenced to life imprisonment for offences under Sections 302 (murder) and Section 376D (gang rape) of the Ranbir Penal Code. The Kathua Rape case incident happened on Jan 10th 2018 where a eight-year-old girl, who was kidnapped and raped in a small village temple in Kathua district after having been kept sedated for four days and murdered. The charge sheet said the girl had gone missing while grazing horses.
Accused Sanji Ram - who has been found to be the mastermind of the crime, is the caretaker of the temple where the offence took place. Three police men - Special Police Officer Surender Verma, Sub Inspector Anand Dutta and Head Constable Tilak Raj - who had allegedly taken Rs 4 lakh as bribe from Sanji Ram for sabotaging the case were sentenced to five years imprisonment for destruction of evidence under Section 201 IPC. The son of accused Sanji Ram is however acquitted by the trial court by giving him benefit of doubt on the basis of his plea that he was giving exam at his college in Muzzafarnagar (UP) on the date of offence. The case of Sanji Ram’s nephew is also pending before the Jammu and Kashmir High Court for determining his plea that whether he was a minor at the time of incident.
