A hide and seek battle between the state government of Tamil Nadu and the courts has finally ended. After the guidelines issued by central government on opening of liquor shops, not just Tamil Nadu but shops all over India saw a huge crowd burst at the shops. Petition was filed in the State High Court to shut down all Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor shops. After evidences of breaking social distancing norms at the outlets, the plea was accepted and shops were asked to shut down. It should not be forgotten that liquor is a huge source of revenue for a state. On two days that it May 7 and May 8 of opening itself, the liquor shops were able to earn Rs. 150 crore. Keeping the thing in mind, the High Court of Tamil Nadu allowed online delivery of the liquor in the states. State saw a huge revenue loss because of the decision that too in a phase on the whole economy is at a pause due to lockdown therefore, it approached the apex court to demand for the stay on the decision of High Court. On Friday, the Supreme Court has allowed the opening of liquor shops. The Apex Court has also asked the State to file a counter but the state demanded time for it which was granted. Soon after the apex court allowed the opening of shops, the government was in action and issued new guidelines for the opening of the shops. Leaving the two High contaminated districts from corona virus that is Chennai and Tiruvallur, shops in entire state will open on Saturday itself. The new timings of the opening of liquor shops is 10 am to 5 pm. The state has also asked the liquor shop vendors to issue new colour token for each day and has put a cap on number of tokens to be issued per day, that is 500. Government has also removed that cap on liquor which can be bought by per customer.
