PROSTITUION IN INDIA: BIRTH AND EVOLUTION

Prostitution In India is the oldest profession, can be traced throughout recorded history. Sex workers in India are forced to choose prostitution as a profession because of the situation in which they are trapped and the lack of basic resources to survive. It's the same as We're selling our brains, they're selling their body for survival because they want food to eat and clothes to wear. Practicing prostitution as a occupation in a country such as India that is rich in its spiritual heritage disturbs its social value. Yet it is very clear from the context that prostitution was already a historically practiced occupation. Indian mythological characters such as Menaka, Rambha, Urvashi, and Thilothamma have been described as the utmost charm and feminine beauty has been considered prostitute acting. Prostitutes were also found during the Pandavas and Kauravas era. In Kautilya 's famous Arthasathra states rules and regulations as to how a prostitute should be, and how their lives should be.

Prostitution In India it has mostly taken the devotional route. The Devadasi scheme existed in ancient times, where it was a prevalent custom among Hindus to contribute their female child to dance in temples and worship God. Throughout South India the girls were named Devadasi and in North India Mukhies. The term Devadasi evolved, and it became a Devadasi system stating it as an institution. Devadasi is still a system and the noteworthy point is that it is said to flourish able. The term devadasi means the female servants of 'gods.' In ancient times, girls were married to the local deity, and that means she was dedicated to serving God. They studied classical dance and music along with their religious service, and because of this, they were given the distinction and high place in society. Dance and music these days were one of the prerequisites at the time of offering prayers made by these girls ' schools. They later started marrying patrons who were normally kings. The kings would be taking care of them and the girls would give them sexual favors. The kings soon lost their powers during the British period, and these people were left behind. Without any other way, they began to do with others as they were doing with the kings, and made their living. This gradually developed and became a large network where children from these devadasis were also sent to prostitution making it activity from a particular family or community for the generation of girls, and they were called prostitutes.

All girls involved in these types of activities commonly referred to as prostitutes under Section 2(f) of the Immoral Trafficking Act 1956. But they have different names to represent them on. Many of them are Tawaif, an elegant and sophisticated prostitute who is singing and dancing, Nochi, a young female trainee under a Tawaif, Randi, a prostitute of the first century, etc. In the late 1980s, Devadasi's scheme was outlawed but not prostitution, and the places where prostitution takes place are called red light areas. In India it is a common misconception that prostitution is illegal in India, rather prostitution is legal but it is illegal to pimp, own, and operate a brothel. Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata are India's major cities where the large numbers of brothels run illegally.

While prostitution is a lawful act, it is not a celebrated act. Prostitution is never a practice accepted from the perspective of a society. Society does not care about prostitution 's legal stamp, certain items cannot be recognized, so at some point in time, it will stay the same. And even though these coordinated practices get citizens allowed to agree and reject it has no certainty. And from this study, it is inferred by saying that there is no clear cure for prostitution in India. Prostitution itself, under the act, is neither illegal nor punishable. Having it legal or illegal would bring no meaningful improvement. This is an individualistic issue, where every person needs to think about them and bring about a change in society.
