Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) to issue 1,100 notices to property tax defaulters.
With the MCJ eyeing more revenue from property tax as compared to last year, the department has decided to tighten its noose around the defaulters. The MCJ is all set to come heavily against property tax defaulters. If a property owner fails to pay tax before the deadline a penalty of 20% will be levied on the total amount which will have to be paid with an interest of 1.5% in the first month. Likewise, 1.5% will add up every month.
The property tax department officials said they are sending notices to the identified defaulters in the city, asking them to pay the tax on time, failing which their propertied will be sealed and they will be made to pay penalty. Officials said they have already started sealing buildings of those who failed to submit the tax within the stipulated time even after multiple notices.
The MC, at present, has a record of as many as 48,000 defaulters, who have not paid the property tax in 2014 and 2105. On the basis of a survey, the MC had identified as many as 2.56 lakh property owners in the city, out of which only 1.1 lakh had paid property tax in 2013-14.
A geographical index survey (GIS) was carried out by the Mumbai-based company Darashaw. According to officials, the GIS survey, conducted in the Model Town area, revealed that a majority of the property owners were not paying property tax. As the civic body had no means to identify over 200 people who had paid property tax, it had decided to issue notices to all owners. Those who have paid their taxes can show their receipts and get their names removed from the defaulters list. Those who have not paid their taxes till date will face sealing of their properties by next week.
