A committee members for the U.P. State Pollution Control Board, the Central Government, the brief holder for the State, and Advocate, A.K. Gupta on Tuesday informed the Allahabad HC that a large quantity of untreated water is still being flowed into the rivers wasting a huge amount of public wealth.
The Bench of Siddhartha Varma and Justice Ajit Kumar Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta was further informed by the committee that the use of plastic bags and plastic material is rampant in the city and the plastic waste which gets generated is leading to the choking the sewer lines and also the drains that are untapped and are being currently treated by process of bio-remediation are discharging the smell of foul water-raising several doubts on the treatment.
The report in specific mentions that about 50% of the present Dallas are still not connected with the sewerage treatment plants also if it is connected, it tends to overflow. These were the observations that were submitted on the court's previous report on 28th January 2021.
The Court also took into consideration the submission made by other committees including Officer Incharge, Magh Mela, Prayagraj that the Stars are being shut down and the untreated water is directly released into the sources.
The court focused on the intervals at which water samples are taken for testing and asked to clearly be specified whether the water sample is taken after sunset and before sunrise. In this regard, the relevant records maintained by the committee and board for the last three months shall be brought on record.
Looking at the background of the particular problem it was the Allahabad HC last month sought responses from various State authorities in UP in relation to the protection of river Ganga and the steps taken by it to ensure that the water quality of the river is not getting deteriorated.
This order was made in a suo moto case registered by the High Court in the year 2006, to save and restore the river. The matter came to be listed after the intervention was filed by Advocate Tripti Verma, claiming that the water of rivers Ganga and Yamuna is being deteriorated in a devastating manner. Further, on 28th January, the Uttar Pradesh State Pollution Control Board told the Allahabad High Court that the water of river Ganga is not fit for human consumption.
