Singapore High court has granted the permission to the senior advocate and former Solicitor General of India, Mr. Gopal Subramanium to appear for Daiichi Sankyo, a Japanese Pharmaceutical company, in the proceedings of Singapore.
On the basis of his immense knowledge and experience in Indian Law Mr. Subramanium is asked to focus on Indian Law issues and assist the High Court of Singapore, as he will be representing Daiichi Sankyo after the court has allowed the other party’s case to be fought by Mr. Harish Salve. The dispute is regarding the enforcement of an arbitral award granted in April last year by an arbitration tribunal.
According to Tribunal orders, ‘the petitioners have to pay Rs 2500 crore for the damages to Daiichi who are accused for hiding information of wrongdoing at Ranbaxy at the time of selling it to the Japanese firm in 2008. But after including interest and legal fees, the award is now valued at Rs 3500 crore’.
For the appeal proceedings the Singapore court is yet to fix the date, however Daiichi has requested the Singapore High Court to allow Subramanium to represent them in appeal proceedings after the Singapore court of appeals allowed Salve to argue for the petitioners.
