The Punjab and Haryana High Court has rejected a petition filed in the public interest for directing Punjab Government and other officials to test students and people residing inside the campus for Coronavirus in Lovely Professional University, Phagwara.
The case was taken up through online conferencing and the bench of chief justice Ravi Shankar Jha & Justice Arun Palli stated that it was apparent that necessary measures were for conducting a screening of students and people on campus was taken by the state with the direction of the Indian Council and Medical Research guidelines. Also, a show-cause notice was issued and the response is in process.
The petition was filed by Sunil Kumar, the son of an ex-Union Minister Vijay Sampla. With the outbreak of Coronavirus, a lockdown all over India has been imposed for the safety of people. Necessary measures are being taken by the government for testing of COVID-19 among citizens. In this crucial time, people have been addressed to follow social distancing. Sunil Kumar was trying to prevent the spread of the virus as the university had retained almost 2421 students despite the COVID-19 outbreak and without following social distancing.
The bench affirmed that upon examination of the facts, there was no necessity to issue or pass an order concerning the petition that was filed by the petitioner. The bench being neutral about the merits of the case refused to grant an order to the petitioner to take up grievances to the other authorities and recourse to law.
