The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to convert Wankhede Stadium into a quarantine centre for high – risk contacts of corona virus patients in the city. A letter has been issued to the MCA administration requesting for “immediate handover” of the stadium. The letter was issued by Chanda R. Jadhav, the assistant commissioner of A ward, he mentioned that “the stadium premises will be utilized for emergency staff members of ward A and quarantining people who have been in contact with COVID-19 patients and do not have the symptoms yet.
The secretary for MCA, confirming receipt of the letter has said that the association will support the authorities. And will be waiting for other instructions from the assistant commissioner.
The BMC will not be using the ground due to pre- monsoon expected in the city; all the closed door facilities consisting of president’s box, corporate boxes and the press boxes may be used for the same.
Wankhede stadium is situated in a residential area next to marine drive and the recent development has made the resident there nervous. The entrance for the stadium is positioned on the main street.
Other then the stadium, the BCCI, premises house of MCA and Garware Club House (GCH) might also get converted into quarantine centre, as mentioned by Raj Purohit, the vice president of GCH that, till now the club has not received any notice from the BMC, but as seen the club has been closed for 2 months now and if the officials would want the possession of the same, they will co-operate with them.
The stadium has hosted the 2011 cricket world cup final and is now ready to join the gymkhanas present on marine drive that have been attained by the BMC to arrange quarantine facilities. BMC is anticipating a rise in COVID-19 cases for this month.
BMC has renovated the National Sports Club present in Mahalakshmi racecourse and Wolri into transitory healthcare centres
