The congress, according to the complainant, made "baseless" and "fake" accusations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government of India in a series of tweets made from the handle @INCIndia.
Hours after a FIR was lodged in Shivamogga disrict of Karnataka against president of Congress Sonia Gandhi, the Karnataka Congress leadership dubbed the petition "mischievous" and requested that the BJP-led state government withdraw the same. The Congress Party alleged there was a political motive for the complaint to cause unrest in the country
The tweets were intended to force the Prime Minister to use the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES) fund for the welfare of the people, according to the party members. "Unfortunately, the BJP leadership misinterpreted this and instigated Praveen Kumar (complainant) to file a complaint against Sonia Gandhi on the basis of false information and without examining its truthfulness," wrote a letter to the state Chief Minister Yediyurappa mentioned.
"On May 11, 2020, a Twitter account managed by the All India Congress Committee headed by Sonia Gandhi published tweets calling PM CARES Fund as PM CARES Fraud, claiming that the PM CARES fund is not being used by the public"
"They also claimed that the Prime Minister was enjoying and going to foreign trips with this fund, which is clearly rumorous news in this COVID-19 pandemic situation against the Government of India. He had lodged a complaint in this regard. Sagar Police filed a FIR against Sonia Gandhi, who heads the INC Twitter account, after a primary enquiry," Praveen KV said.
Justifying his demand for criminal proceedings against Gandhi and other leaders of Congress, Kumar said, "They called the PM CARES Fund a fraud and claimed on Twitter that the money donated to the Fund is not being used for the public, but instead the money is being used to fund the foreign trips of PM Narendra Modi."
"These are government rumours, so I lodged a report," Kumar said.
Several reports say that a case has been filed under Sections 153 and 505 of the IPC against the president of Congress and other grand old party members.
PM Narendra Modi has announced the formation of the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund PM CARES Fund after the country's coronavirus outbreak.
It was created to undertake and support any kind of relief or assistance relating to a public health emergency or some other kind of disaster, calamity or crisis, either man-made or natural, including the establishment or upgrading of healthcare or pharmaceutical facilities, other appropriate infrastructure, funding of related research or any other kind of support.
The PM CARES Fund is intended to render financial assistance, grant money payments or take such other steps as the Board of Trustees may deem necessary for the affected population.
