The managing director of India Today Group Rahul Kanwal has agreed to broadcast apologies to Mr. Tikoo through broadcasting a video on 19 February 2018 between 10.00 pm to 10.30 pm. The apology is with respect to an incident of year the 2010 when a panel discussion was going on channel Headlines Today (Now known as India Today) between Rahul Kanwal, a retired Lieutenant General and two other correspondents. The episode showed a complaint allegedly filed by a businessman named Vinod Gandhi against the chief army staff somewhere in April 2010 which showed the attempts of extortion by the army general, an audio tape containing that conversation was aired there whose genuineness was a matter of question. After that discussion a defamation suit was filed against Gandhi and Kanwal before Special Mobile Magistrate, Jammu and the respondents were summoned in 2010 by the magistrate.
The case was filed under Section-500 RPC and summon was issued. Kanwal challenged the same before Jammu and Kashmir High Court. The court dismissed his appeal and directed the trial court to commence its functions. Kanwal then moved to the apex court before the bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Amitava Roy and offered to broadcast an unconditional apology.
Senior advocate Amrendra Sharan with other advocates was representing the appellant while advocate Faheem Nisar Shah along with other advocates was representing the respondents in the apex court.
