On Saturday India’s first-ever Lok Adalat was organized by The High Court of Chhattisgarh and State Legal Services authority Amid the outbreak of the COVID 19 Pandemic.
Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh, Justice P R Ramachandra inaugurated the session this Saturday.
Lok Adalat, ie People’s Court, is one of India’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, it is a forum wherein cases pending on panchayat or at the pre-litigation stage in a court of law are settled. They were provided with a statutory status under the purview of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. As per this Act, the awards(decision)ruled by the Lok Adalats are considered as a case of the civil court and are final and have to bear on all parties and no appeal against such an award lies before any court of law.
If the parties do not feel satisfied with Lok Adalat’s Awards (though there is no provision for an appeal against such an award), they can initiate litigation by approaching the court of appropriate jurisdiction.
This was the first-ever attempt of E-Lok Adalat in the Country. This was organized through online video conferencing.
3135 cases were identified to be compromised and about 195 benches were constituted for the same.
A sum total of 2270 cases were settled on a single day through the medium of video conferencing.
Benches were also constituted in remote areas like Sarguja, Kanker, Bastar, Surajpur, etc.
Justice Prasant Kumar Misha, Executive Chairman of SLSA, Chhattisgarh presided over the inauguration ceremony. High Court Judges Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastav( Chairman of the Computerisation ceremony) and Gautam Bhaduri( Chairman of HCLSC) were also present.
The E-Lok Adalat was successfully organized as a result of the collective efforts of Mr. Shabbudin Queshi CPC, High Court Mr. Siddharth Aggarwal, Member Secretary, SLSA and the entire team of DLSAs in Chhattisgarh.
