Amitabh Rawat along with the company of few additional Sessions Judge extended the judicial custody of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others involved in the Delhi riots conspiracy case till March 1st, 2021 on Tuesday. The State of Delhi police has been investigating in deep assuming it to be a larger conspiracy behind the New Delhi riots that broke out in February 2020. In September 2020 the main charge sheet was filed against Pinjara Tod members and Jawaharlal Nehru University students which included the names of Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal, Jamia Millia Islamia, student activist Gulfisha Fatima and Asif Iqbal Tanha.
Others who were charge-sheeted included, the former Congress Councillor Ishrat Jahan, JC Committee (Jamia Coordination Committee) members Safoora Zargar, Shifa-Ur-Rehma, and Meeran Haider, suspended AAP (Aam Aadhmi Party) Councillor Tahir Hussain, activist Khalid Saifi, Salim Malik, Mohd Salim Khan, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, and Athar KhanKhan were the names included in the charge sheet along with above mentioned main names. After that, a supplementary charge sheet was also filed in the month of November against former Jawaharlal Nehru University's student leader', Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in a case related to the alleged issue that led to a larger conspiracy in the communal violence in parts of Delhi in the month of February.
The FIR (First Information Report) contains very strict charges lodged u/s, 13, 16, 17, 18 of the UAPA, and u/s 25 and 27 of the Arms Act and u/s 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act,1984. The persons who were accused were also charged under various sections of IPC (Indian Penal Code), 1860 for the offenses they allegedly committed. Among the 18 accused persons whose names were listed while lodging the FIR, Faizan Khan and Safoora Zargar are currently out on bail. Still, the other accused persons are to remain in custody. The court posted the hearing on March 1st, 2021 through a virtual hearing method wherein they conduct trial through video conferencing along with the presence of all accused.
