A division bench of Bombay High Court comprising Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice NM Jamdar, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by National Association for the Blind (NAB) criticized the Reserve Bank of India for changing the features and configurations of the indian currency notes frequently. The NAB, via the PIL ,filed prayed before the Hon'ble Court to issue such directions so as to compel the RBI to include unique features in the recently introduced currency notes, that would help the visually impaired/bllind to identify the denominations.
Dhaval Patill, the counsel appearing for the RBI was questioned by Chief Justice Nandrajog regarding the frequent changes that ultimateley resultedd into inconvenince to the visually impaired individuals. Uday Warunjikar, who appeared for the NAB in a previous hearing had submitted that the fresh denominations introduced by the RBI were anything but user-friendly for the visually impaired and blind. He also informed the court that the former notes had unique marks embedded that helped in distinction between such denominations, further each denomination used to be associated with varying size of the identification marks.
The Bombay High Court has agreed to such argument and held that the distinctive features are rquired to be retained (both in the cases of coins as well as currency notes)
