Recently the Madras High Court was faced with a case wherein the students were being reprimanded for intake of alcohol. The incident relates to a group of eight students of the Devanga Arts College at Arupukottai of the Virudhunagar district. The students were in their second year of BSc in Computer Science.
It was alleged that all the eight students had attended the lectures in their college under the influence of alcohol. This act was a clear violation of the code of conduct of the college and hence the college authorities decided to take an action against them. On due deliberations the college management was of the opinion that, all these eight students should be given their respective Transfer Certificates (TC) from the college.
The students on being aggrieved by this decision of the College management decided to approach the Madras High Court. The matter was heard and decided by Hon’ble Mr. Justice R Suresh Kumar. The students advocated that they should be allowed to continue in the college and such a harsh step should not be taken against them as this would hamper their entire career in the future.
On consideration of all the consequences that would follow if the students were prevented from pursuing studies in the college, the bench also took into consideration the ideals of the Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Kamaraj who was a strong believer of the policy of prohibition. He advocated preventive measures rahter than resorting to strict actions.
Hence, on considering all these aspects the Madras High Court directed that all the eight students to:
clean the premises of Kamaraj Memorial House, help the visitors who shall be visiting the Kamaraj Memorial House on 15th of August 2019 i.e. the Independence Day of India from 10 am to 4 pm, and to hold placards bearing slogans condemning the consumption of alcohol.
On adherence to the above directions the students would be allowed to continue being affiliated with their college, the same was brought to the knowledge of the College Management.
