Rape has now become an everyday phenomenon, recently a 2nd year student of an engineering college was kidnapped and raped. The victim was a student of Trichy Engineering College in Thuvakudi village in Tamil Nadu. She along with a male-friend was out for a movie. On missing out the curfew time,the girl was unable to enter the hostel as the gates were shut. The duo had nowhere to go and hence they decided to spend the night at a nearby bus shelter in Thuvakudi.
While they were at the bus shelter a man riding a two-wheelerapproached them and started questioning them about their whereabouts. After a series of questions he attacked the man who was accompanying the victim, left unconscious. He took the girl along with her under the false pretext of driving to a nearby police station.
Instead, he drove to a deserted place and then he raped the her. The accused then dropped her back to the same bus shelter.
Following which, the victim took her friend to a nearby hospital to get injuries inflicted by the accused examined. The two then approached the police station to report the incident and file a complaint against the accused. The matter was reported with the police and the superintendent of police of Trichy police station Zia Ul Haq personally handled the matter. He ordered a rigorous investigation of the matter. The vicitm identified a picture of the accused shown to her by the police, he happened to be a history-sheeter often found involved in petty offences in the area. His name was Manikandan aged about 32 years who belonged to the Vazhavandhan kottai village in the Thiruchirapalli District of Tamil Nadu.
After these details were confirmed by the victim, the police immediately formed a special team which was asked to find the accused. Manikandan was found and arrested by the police and put into judicial custody. Meanwhile the parents of the victim also came down to Trichy and an official complaint was lodged against the accused.The girl was then taken to a private hospital where she received the necessary medical treatment. The police investigation was done under the guidance of the Trichy range deputy inspector general of police (DIG) V. Balakrishnan and Superintendent of police Zia Ul Haq.
After the accused was arrested and placed in police custody, he was charged for the offences of - kidnapping, kidnapping for rape, criminal intimidation and impersonation.
