Study of Lakes to be Conducted by NEERI
On Monday the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike informed the Karnataka High Court that the proposal has been submitted by the CSIR- National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to study every aspects of restoration, rejuvenation and maintenance of water bodies such as tanks and lakes of the city within a period of six months in two phases at a worth Rs. 3.45 Crore.
For the purpose of implementation of 18th June direction by court for conducting a study of the lakes in the city through NEERI, and removal of encroachment of water drains, in its status report has sent a detailed proposal project to carry out the study in partnership with the institutes having expert knowledge of this area. According to BBMP the proposal of the project has been forwarded for the approval of the state government.
A division bench with presiding Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Mohammad Nawaz, has described the NEERI quoted amount as reasonable and directed the state to step ahead for the approval of the proposal. NEERI has already been directed by the court to identify disappeared lakes and suggestion including short and long term measures for restoring, rejuvenating and maintaining the lakes.
In a status report by BBMP, during June and July, in survey of 650 instances of storm-water drains (SWD), non-encroachment cases were 296 and the remaining were encroachments. Out of 354, 201 encroachments were removed and the left are yet to be removed. Stay order has been granted by the High Court in 52 cases against the removal of encroachments.
The bench after perusal of the above details had directed the BBMP to look forward towards taking steps for the removal of 101 encroachments. Till 14 August, further hearing has been adjourned.
